Madam, A letter in last week's Gazette concerning the traffic in Alton Street, has prompted me to make the following comments.
What was originally called 'Ross By-pass' was built between 1958 and1960 and ran from Wilton Roundabout to the motorway roundabout on the Ledbury Road.
The second stage of the by-pass actually called Ross Relief Road, was built years later, and ran from Labels Roundabout to Hildersley Roundabout.
The third and final stage has yet to be built, and will run from Hildersley Roundabout following along side the old Railway line to Tudorville, terminating with a roundabout on the Walford Road at the top of Roman Way.
Much of the incoming traffic on the Walford Road, both private and commercial, avoids the town centre by using roads that are totally unsuitable for this purpose. These include Eastfield road, Merrivale Road, Merrivale Lane and Alton Street.
The time has surely come for Ross Town Council to actively lobby Hereford County Council, and through the Council to pressure the Department of Transport to provide the funds to carry out this work. Ross is being slowly strangled by traffic and positive action is urgently needed.
C Constance, Ross
