A SHORTER entry of commercial finished cattle continued to meet a faster trade than previously seen at the livestock market in Ross-on-Wye on Monday, June 15.

Auctioneers RG & RB Williams report that the demand for steers remained consistent throughout the sale, topping at £2,591 per head.

Meanwhile cattle remained keenly sought after by retail buyers with prices ranging from 340p to 370p per kilogramme.

Quality butchers’ heifers topped at 410p per kilogramme and 400p per kilogramme for Limousin cross heifers from Messrs Checker of Ostbridge Manor Farm.

The overall average price of finished cattle was £2,073 per head.

A nice entry of cull cows peaked at £1,875 per head, representing 282p per kilogramme.

Many quality sorts sold upwards of £1,660 per head, but generally better sorts sold between 260p and 282p per kilogramme and leaner cows traded hands either side of 240p per kilogramme.

The overall average price of cows was £1,880 with the top vendor being J Howells of Colethrop Court Farm and FI Bevan & Sons of Weston Hall Farm.

A reduced entry of spring lambs met strong competition from start to finish peaking at £217 - 460p per kilogramme.

Meat and weight were the order of the day trading between 450p - 460p per kilogramme with lambs topping at 460p per kilogramme - £217 per head.

The entry was dominated by heavier sorts with all those weighing more than 43kg traded between £190 and £217.

The overall average price of lambs was £193p per head. The top vendors were WN Gooch of Lower House and Messrs Evans of Peters Farm.

One of the smallest entries of cull ewes met strong demand topping at £205.50 from Messrs HH Williams and Son. The complete consignment averaged out at £180 per head.
