THIS weekend four local firefighters will be attempting to climb the Uk’s three peaks challenge all within a 24-hour period.

The team, aptly named FourFireFighters, features two retained firemen from Whitchurch and two from Ross-on-Wye who will be undertaking climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon wearing a full fire kit and breathing apparatus sets.

Mount Snowdon is the busiest and most popular mountain in Britain with an estimated 500,000 people climbing to the summit each year.

Ross firefighter, Shane Kittner, who is one of the team along with Joe Malsom have been at the station since June 2022, explained that this three peaks challenge is part of a larger fundraising event where they are doing four physically demanding challenges across the year to raise money for the Firefighters Charity.

The charity provides lifelong physical, mental, and practical health support to serving and retired fire service personnel and their families across the UK.

Mr Kittner said: “Unfortunately, due to all of the amazing work that the charity does, it is currently giving more than it is receiving.

“This is a crucial support system that we cannot afford to lose. This will be our third challenge, having already completed the first challenge in April, where we carried a 70kg dummy across the length of the Malvern Hills, a distance of some10 miles.

The four firefighters also include Zav Gunn who has provided on call cover at Whitchurch station since February 2021 and Felix Garratt who has served since September 2023.

The firefighter’s second challenge was staged in June, where the men cycled 52 miles, immediately followed by a 52-metre fire engine pull.

The team, at the time of going to press, have currently raised £4,702 via their Just Giving page on the internet (search for FourFireFighters) and are likely to exceed the original target of £5,000 by the time they embark on the challenge.
