Teachers, mums and children from Maple class at Berry Hill Primary School have been working hard to raise money towards a £40,000 target for an operation for their classmate, Harry.
Harry was born prematurely at 31 weeks, weighing 3.14oz. He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at one-year-old (spastic Diplegia) which means he can’t take part in certain activities, cannot walk unaided and gets extremely tired.
Harry needs an operation to give him a brighter outlook for the future, take away his pain and help him to get around more easily.
The operation itself is not funded on the NHS and Harry’s Mum, Sasha, is having to raise £40,000 for it to go ahead.
Harry’s classmates wanted to do their bit to help and, with their teachers and parents, decided to get sponsored to do a month of exercise. Rockets Health and Fitness Centre in Coleford very kindly offered the use of the gym to support the challenge. Rockets even gave two structured sessions of intense workouts each weekend as part of the challenge. Everyone taking part set themselves a specific goal, whether it was running 40 miles per week or walking 200 miles over the month.
The challenge came to an end on Sunday, May 20th when the teachers, mums and children took part in a final challenge that resulted in a huge water fight. They also presented Harry, and his mum, Sasha with a cheque for £4,000 which was the total amount raised by everyone taking part in the challenge.
