MADAM, Your front page picture this week reminds me how much we owe to former councillors Joyce Thomas and Joyce Davis for their sterling work — nay, for their sheer persistence — in the years following the floods of 2000. When others faltered these ladies were determined.

The result is not something I would be proud of if I were calling myself 'Minister', Both Millpond Street and Brookend Street were excluded from the project by this Herefordshire Council, and I gather both are still reckoned subject to a 100-year flood (along with Morrison's supermarket and its car park) in the Environment Agency's current estimates.

However, at least the water outfit has been persuaded to hide the sanitary flotsam that was surging from the sewers — and, for that, we have to thank the ladies.
