MADAM, It was with disbelief that on Monday morning (April 22nd), I went into every shop in Ross that sold cards and I could not find one where I could purchase my yearly St George's Day cards to post to my friends. Clintons always sold them but of course they are now closed so I felt sure that somewhere in Ross I would be able to buy them. Not likely.

One person advised me to buy 'online', which defeats the whole point of supporting local shops. Another kindly lady advised me that Waitrose in Monmouth, Wales, had them on sale. How bizarre.

I have since told all of my friends wishing them a happy St George's Day and explaining the reason for no cards this year. Good publicity for the town.

To finish, I am aware that people like myself are in the minority, wishing to acknowledge this day. But surely just one retailer could have accommodated us few, without having to travel into Wales. Well done Waitrose.
