ALICE Jones, a former teacher who recently celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by pupils from a local primary school has died.
In June Alice celebrated her 100th birthday celebrations at the West Bank Residential Care Home.
A spokesperson for the care home said: “It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of our dear Alice. We had the privilege of celebrating her remarkable 100th birthday in June, a milestone that was filled with laughter, love, and a beautiful gathering of pupils from Ashfield Park Primary School who came to mark the occasion with her.
“That day was a true reflection of the joy she brought to those around her: smiles filled the room, stories were shared, and Alice’s gentle spirit shone brightly as she reached such a special age.
“Alice was not only cherished by her family but also by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her at Westbank. She carried herself with grace and kindness, always with a twinkle in her eye, and her presence brought comfort and happiness to those around her.”
Alice explained during her birthday celebrations that she grew up in Sellack and returned to the village school after completing her training to become a teacher.
She stayed there for the next 40 years, until the school closed in 1983.
Alice then spent her retirement in Bridstow having moved to the village in 1960, by helping out at the local mother and toddler group.
Over the decades, the church had always been part of Alice’s life, spending much of her time at St Tysilio in Sellack and at St Bridget’s Church in Bridstow.
Alice, who had been a resident of the residential care home for the past four years said that receiving a personal birthday card from King Charles and Queen Camila had made her day.
Alice added that she had always loved the Royal family and even attended Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation celebrations in London in June 1953.
The care home added: “While we are heartbroken at the loss of Alice, we are also grateful for the precious memories we were able to make with her, especially during her centenary celebration, which will remain a treasured moment for us all.
“Our love and thoughts are with Alice’s family and friends at this difficult time. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered always.”
