Children in the Ross-on-Wye area can learn the art of chess for free under the guidance of a three-time Welsh champion.

Monmouth Junior Community Chess Club is helping its members solve problems, think strategically and work in partnership with each other.

Run by Tim Kett, and his wife, Sarah, the sessions, which are free, are held on Fridays during term time at Monmouth School Boys’ Prep, at The Grange in Hadnock Road, between 5pm and 6pm. The sessions will run this Friday (March 1st) and then on March 8th, 15th and 22nd.

Tim, who plays chess competitively and travels around Europe to hone his skills, and Sarah, who coaches teachers on how to run sessions, work in more than 20 schools across South Wales.

Monmouth Junior Community Chess Club is open to children of all abilities, aged six years old and above.

Mr Kett said: “All club members can win prizes, including badges, mascots and gold spots. The club is a lovely place to make friends, and the sessions are a mixture of learning and playing.”
