The Gallipoli Campaign, which raged from April 25th, 1915 to January 19th, 1916), was a pivotal time in the history of World War I and for the local Herefordshire Regiment. Unfortunately, it was not as successful as intended and a great many men who went to fight never returned.
Ross Royal British Legion feel these men should have been called “The Heroic Herefords”. Those on the War Memorial in Ross include: Private Lionel Charles Evans aged 27, December 15th, Private Arthur Husbands aged 24, September 25th, Captain Malcolm Hereward Meredith aged 20, November 10th, Serjeant Alfred Lewis Raymond aged 25, August 9th, Private Ernest John Seymour aged 23, May 8th. (Anzac Landings), Drummer Bertie Montague Sherwood aged 23, November 27th and Private Francis Stallard aged 27, August 10th. There are many others commemorated on district memorials. All those who fell in Gallipoli are remembered in cemeteries and on memorials in Turkey including Azmak, Helles, Lala Baba and Alexandria in Egypt.
On Sunday, August 9th, from 10am to 4pm, Ross RBL will be in the Market Place for their own Commemoration of Gallipoli Day.
There will be exhibitions and histories of those who landed at Suvla Bay and fought heroically, there will be information stands and a chance to look through the hundreds of pages of research of all those who fell in Ross-on-Wye & District during World War One.
