A book that was borrowed approximately 60 years ago, from the Girl Guides, was finally returned to the Ross Scout and Guide HQ on Thursday, November 12th.

Last month, a lady brought the logbook into the offices of the Ross Gazette. Barbara Elliot, who was a member of the 2nd Ross Girl Guiding company when she was younger, took home the log book to decorate the front cover with some embroidery.

She moved to Somerset many years ago, but came to Ross recently for a visit, brought the book with her, and handed it into the Gazette office, in the hope of finally returning it to its rightful place; with the local Girl Guiding group.

The log book contains entries from 1948 until 1955. There are diary entries, written by various members of the group, in immaculate handwriting, detailing the group’s meetings, trips and exercises together. There are also little drawings to accompany their stories, old newspaper clippings, photographs, letters and leaflets.

Ross Gazette reporter, Catherine Barkley returned the book to the Ross group of Girl Guides on Thursday evening.

Pam Hill, one of the Joint County Commissioners for Herefordshire told the Ross Gazette that girl guiding is just as important today as it has ever been, and although some of the activities, such as camping trips, are consistent with the entries detailed in the book, girl guiding is continually updating the activities and experiences it offers young girls, to reflect modern life, but she added it would still be really interesting to have a read through.

The book will now be stored safely in the Herefordshire Girl Guiding archives.
