MADAM, I have been surprised and disappointed at the lack of local public reaction to the potential development and creation of 500 new jobs on the model Farm Estate.
I have also been disappointed by the apparent lack of local organisations, particularly politicians and local Ross councils, with this development.
At a time when it is common practise to 'bash' Europe, this should come as a timely reminder that EC membership can bring with it huge opportunities and benefits to local communities.
Not since 1995 when the Ross lnitiative was a catalyst to a multimillion pound investment of European funds in reshaping its road infrastructure and parking, when we welcomed Rehau and saw Ross?Labels begin its exciting and successful journey, has the town enjoyed such potentially ground breaking news.
Such a development, as witnessed by the positive reaction of John Kyrle High School, would not only bring about the creation of skilled employment for local young people, but be a boost to the local community as a whole, not least in the engagement of local people in the construction of the site, investment in housing and increased spend in our town.
Since retreating from the public eye some 12 years ago I have been spending a great deal of my time collaborating with European countries. This has also involved our Community Interest Company welcoming delegations from 17 countries to the West Midlands.
I never cease to be amazed at the surprise and pleasure visitors derive from travelling across the Region, including Herefordshire, many returning for private holidays and visits.
Ross is an incredibly attractive place to live and work, hence our own physical relocation back to Greytree. The hourly train service to Birmingham from Ledbury with its free parking makes that city and surrounding area accessible at a very reasonable cost – £7 return for a Pensioner with a Rail Card – to everyone. The motorway links are unparalleled.
So why aren't our local Councils and business leaders banging this particular drum alongside setting up initiatives to clear dog mess and repair potholes?
Whilst I share the cynicism around the bureaucracy of the EU there are a vast amount of ways we can learn and work together. There are a large number of initiatives funded by the EU which are open to local organisations, groups and individuals to join.
If anyone or any organisation is interested in developing this and other themes please contact me via [email protected]">[email protected].
