This wonderful picture of the owner of Jolly's, the village store at Goodrich, certainly caused a great deal of interest with readers of The Ross Gazette.

Almost as soon the papers were delivered last week the phone began to ring with people who could identify the gentleman, pictured right.

He was Fred Powell who spent his whole working life, apart from a spell in the army due to National Service, at Jolly's.

He first went to work for the original Mr Jolly then he worked for his son-in-law, Mr Moses before finally taking over the shop himself. He ran the shop with his wife Doreen for more than 20 years before he retired, about 20 years ago.

Fred is dead now but his three sisters, Betty, Eleanor and Phylis all live in Bernard Hackett Court in Ross.

One of them, Betty Gwatkin, told The Ross Gazette how thrilled she was to see her brother's picture as it brought back many happy memories. The Ross Gazette will pass her contact details on to Julia Mayers who sent the picture into the Gazette.

Julia lived in Pencraig as a child and Mrs Gwatkin said she would be delighted to talk to her and relive a few more old memories.

Mary Powell, of Ross Heritage Centre, and no relation to Fred Powell, also contacted the Ross Gazette to say that she had several pictures of the schools Julia attended, the Council School in Cantilupe Road and The Grammar School and she would be delighted to pass copies of these onto Julia.
