Katherine Alice Hukam Dad was born at Farm Cottage, Arbour Hill, Ross-on-Wye, on February 27th, 1926, nine months and eight days after her parents, Benedict and Edith Flommer, returned from Austria.
While Katherine’s early schooling was in Ross, her parents were extremely proud when she gained a scholarship to attend Monmouth Girls’ School.
During the early years of WWII, she became an active and dedicated “land-girl”. In 1943 she married an Indian soldier, Sadar Hukam Dad Khan and bore four children; Yusaf, Jahan, Maryam and Premila.
In terms of employment, Katherine initially worked for WH Smith’s in the accounts department. However, she would have been more readily recognised as the “first welcoming face” of the numerous doctors’ and dentists’ surgeries in Ross.
On reaching her 90th birthday, her family wanted to acknowledge their Mother’s tenacity, integrity, strength of character, and the sacrifices she made for her children, her husband and parents, during her life. They have always admired her courage and they will forever hold her in the highest respect.
Having lived in Ross for 77 years, Katherine now lives with her daughter, Maryam, and son-in-law, Edward O’Connor, in Thetford, Norfolk. Their love and care has been immeasurable, and no doubt, has contributed to their Mother’s longevity, and good health.
Katherine continues to be actively involved in her faith and community group, Silverthreads.
