Ross Ladies continued their winning streak when they played at home to Shipton Ollife on Saturday 12th November. Play began in Ross' favour with some early runs forcing the Shipton defence to work hard. However, Ross did not continue with the momentum they began with and some unfortunate marking allowed the opposing team the opportunity to make a break which was skillfully completed with a goal. Despite some impressibe defensive work from Rosie Caulfield and Kate Handley, Shipton worked hard to create more oppotunities amd were soon rewarded with a short corner for their efforts. Skillful play saw the opposition convert their short corner which took the score to 2-0. Undettered, Ross regained focus and strived to move the score to a more reflective position. Rebecca Heyes was instrumental in creating space which allowed the Ross Ladies to make some impressive runs. Amy Bowen wsa outstanding on the left wing and worked well with Louise Cross in order to have a serious attempt on goal. However, the Shipton goalkeeper proved to quick footed and made an impressive save. Heyes continued to play the ball forward with the support of Liz Ellis and this time attack was focused on the right driven forward by Katie Williams and Kate Cameron. Quick passing outwitted the opposition and enabled Pauline Hemingway to score her first goal of the match. Confident that they now had a mark on the score sheet Ross continued to pressure Shipton. A strong defence, provided by Liese Brady and Claire Vines, enabled Captain Loz Stephens to perform a skillful run outqitting several of the opposition. Stephens then impressively passed the ball to Cross who supported by Bowen drove the ball forward to allow Hemingway her second goal, equalising the score shortly before half time.
Returning to the pitch after half time, Ross Ladies were much tigther, preventing Shipton from having any realistic opportunities. Heyes was fundamental in midfield, creatively blocking any attempts made by the opposition. Ross were quick witted in their passing which appeared to confuse Shipton. Bowen played a crucial role on the left wing, which enabled Hemingway, Cross and Cameron to pressure the Shipton defence. Supported by Williams and Heyes the Ross forwards continued to mount an aggressive attack on the Shitpon defence. Unfortunately, several attempts on goal were unsuccessful and the score was closely guarded at 2-2 until Cross and Williams created an opportunity for Hemingway who superbly smashed a well executed pass into the goal. Which meant a score of 3-2 for Ross and a well deserved hatrick for Hemingway. Not wanting to be complacent, Ross continued to attack with Brady, Caulfield, Vines and Ellis outstanding in their role in defence. Indeed, their skillful blocking enabled Stephens further opportunities to make some stunning runs and pressure the Shipton defence. Stephens's efforts were rewarded with a short corner from wich Heyes scored an awesome goal taking the score to 4-2. It seemed that this would be the final score, until two minutes before full time Shipton were awarded a penalty flick and ultimately a score of 4-3. Ross certainly deserved their win and were unlucky not to see a score on their part.
