Many local residents have commented on social media about the large potholes in Copse Cross Street. They appeared following bad weather recently and were quickly earmarked for emergency repair work by Herefordshire Council.
However, within a very short space of time the emergency repairs had been destroyed, by a combination of the large amount of traffic, including large vehicles, which uses this as it is one of the main routes into, and out of town, and bad weather.
One local woman, Janet Haworth, visited the Ross Gazette office last week.
She commented: “Anyone who drives up the High Street towards Walford will be well aware of two substantial pot holes in the road, both now deep enough to expose the hard core sublevel.
“Pedestrians will also be aware of drivers now swerving to avoid them, moving ever closer to the very narrow pavement.”
She also questioned if the County Council was aware of the High Street road closure for work to be carried out on another matter at the same time.
She said: “Some joined up thinking and basic communication would have enabled the highways folk to negotiate with the contractors to include the potholes in their excavations and resurfacing. The potholes were only a few feet away.
“This section of the High Street is a busy congested thoroughfare and the Sunday road closure was the ideal time to have had the potholes repaired. What a wasted money saving opportunity and how unbelievably ridiculous that the potholes are still here.”
Councillor Richard Mayo, who as the ward Councillor and County Councillor, has been very involved in looking at this section of the roads in Ross for some time. He told the Ross Gazette he has already been trying to get the details from Herefordshire Council about when the work to make this stretch of road safer will begin. He said this is to be paid for by the developers of the Rosswyn and was agreed through a 106 agreement.
He also said that emergency repairs are carried out quickly, but unfortunately there does not seem a system in place to then return to do a proper repair.
He said: “I will try to get this changed.”
