This is Dementia Awareness Week and one new scheme which has recently got off to a successful start is the Ross Meeting Centre. As so many people are living longer than ever before, there is an ever greater possibility of developing age related conditions such as dementia.

The Ross Meeting Centre is playing its part by supporting those who have slight to moderate dementia. Taking part in activities such as reminiscing about their first jobs to playing word games all help to keep their minds more alert.

Singing, playing percussion instruments and discussing current news items have all been included in the programme recently. The activities are also enjoyable for their carer, partner or the other volunteers.

Anne Parsons is the lead for the project but many other people have come forward to give their time to help such a worthwhile project. Retired GP Dr Sue Murphy told the Ross Gazette that she had worked at a practice in Exmouth which had a very elderly population. She said she is delighted to use her experience as a volunteer with Ross Meeting Centre. She said that the Ross Meeting Centre is different from previous schemes to help those with dementia and their carers is that they attend together.

The meetings take place at Christ Church every Wednesday, Between 11am and 3pm and includes lunch, the cost is £5 per person.
