MADAM, I am writing to say a great big thank you to everyone who has supported the campaign to bring about improvements in road safety in Bridstow over the years as many of the changes called for are on the way according to the Highways Agency. Readers will recall that the Ross Gazette has followed this story for many years including the launch of the petition in March 2010.

Last year over 428 local residents signed the petition calling for improvements in road safety through Bridstow and at the A40 Wilton Roundabout. This was submitted to the Highways Agency along with a paper setting out the case for change backed by detailed evidence demonstrating how the proposals would improve things for all road users. The case received widespread support from Bridstow Parish Council, Ross Town Council, Herefordshire Council, Bridstow CE School, Jesse Norman MP, Amey Herefordshire, Age Concern, RNIB, the Road Safety Foundation, Ross Traders, Ross Walking Group, Ramblers – Ross-on-Wye Group, local residents and others.

The imminent changes are aimed at establishing a more appropriate balance between pedestrians and motorised vehicle road users and improving road safety for everyone.

Years of highlighting the issues on the A49 through Bridstow appear to have paid off as we are about to get a reduction in the speed limit and other changes including more appropriate signage, red surfacing and anti skid surfacing. There will also be an improved crossing point across the A49 for pedestrians between Bannuttree Lane and the C1271 by the school. Although the forthcoming proposals mark significant progress they do not yet cover the A40 Wilton Roundabout, that campaign will continue until a solution to create a safe crossing is found.

The Highways Agency has acknowledged the difficulties faced here too and have committed to work with the local community to find an appropriate solution to the problems.
