Car crime in the Ross-on-Wye area, including thefts from cars and thefts of cars, has increased from this time last year.

The police are increasing patrols following reports of men being disturbed while they were trying car handles in the Oaklands area. The Ross Gazette also reported this week that a car had been stolen from Brampton Street.

Chief Inspector for the area, Adam Thomas, said: "We have seen a slight increase in thefts from or of cars in the Ross-on-Wye area when compared to October last year.

"Investigations are ongoing and we would ask anyone who witnesses any suspicious activity in the area or who has any information that could help us to call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

"Ross on Wye is a safe, low crime town and any increase in crime, albeit small, can have an adverse effect on feelings of safety. We are very aware of this and wish to bring the offenders to justice as soon as possible.

"We are carrying out proactive patrols in the area but we also continue to remind people of the action they can take to help prevent opportunistic thieves from striking."

We would also advise the following:

Any time you leave your vehicle make sure that your doors, windows and sun roof are locked.

Don’t put bags or other items on the passenger seat, whilst driving as they could be snatched.

Don’t leave any property on display in your car, this includes things like bags and coats which don’t look expensive but could be seen by a thief as hiding something more valuable.

Don’t hide purses, wallets or other items in your car. The first place a thief will look is in the glove compartment or under the seat.

Always keep your car keys safe, never leave them in the ignition if you leave the vehicle as a thief could quickly jump in and drive away. At home keep keys in safe place away from windows and doors.
