Following concerns about recent work which removed trees in a Ross-on-Wye Conservation Area, adjacent to Metcalf Close and Rudhall Brook, which is next to Ross Health and Fitness - investigations have taken place as to the legitimacy of the work carried out.

Councillor Caroline Utting, Chairperson of the Ross-on-Wye Town Council Planning Committee, said: “Investigations by the deputy Clerk have revealed the five day notice was given because one of the sycamore trees was very dangerous – a report was submitted to BBLP by Adrian Hope on behalf of Simon Porter. Acer Tree Services then carried out the work to the trees and discovered, when they removed the ivy that all the trees were in the same state.

“The planning officer has said that the sycamores will regrow as coppiced trees and he feels replacements on that site would be in appropriate. “He has suggested that the Town Council have a look to see where else a group of (possibly specimen) trees might be put to replace them.

“Cllr Richard Mayo has spoken to Mr Porter who will be tidying up the site, including the hedge, which, when it starts to reshoot will be an improvement. The fence will also be put back.”

Cllr Utting said that: “The Town Council Planning Committee will be considering where the replacement trees should be planted at its next meeting. As it will most likely be on land owned by the Town Council, it can liaise with BBLP to ensure the work takes place.”

She added: “I’m not aware a time limit has been placed on when the work to tidy up the Metcalf Close site must be carried out.”
