MADAM, I am writing on behalf of the Chairman and Committee of the Ross-on-Wye Branch of the Royal British Legion – we are asking yet again for the good people of Ross to support us. On Sunday, September 7th we are holding an Honour Walk starting at 11am at The War Memorial at The Prospect, remembering all those named on the Memorial who died fighting for their country. There are 105 names from WW1 and 49 from WW2, ideally we would like someone to walk for each of them. Men such as Private Walters William Halls of the Kings Shropshire Light Infantry. He was the brother of Mrs May Counsell who lived in Lydbrook and was our first casualty, dying on October 4th, 1914. Or Private Walter Reginald Tingle who died on October 25th, 1914, aged 18. His brother Herbert died on April 29th, 1918 aged 20, they were the sons of Henry and Eliza of Berryfields, Ross-on-Wye – the list of these brave men goes on and 90% were born in Ross itself. However people are asked to come along and remember their own loved ones if they so wish. This walk is all part of the 100th Anniversary Commemorations of the start of World I. Sponsorship Forms are available at The Market House or on 01989 566301 but it is not a necessity to raise money as this is all about Remembrance. Registration can be done on the day. Ross Ramblers will be running the walk and we wish to thank them for their support. St John's will be on standby. The walk will finish at The Hope & Anchor where refreshments will be available.
