If you thought that cheerleading only involved cheering and waving pompoms, a new class in Ross will make you think again.

Founded in October 2009, Ross Tempest is a new cheerleading programme for the Herefordshire/Monmouthshire area. It has been created by Rachael Boynton, a dedicated University cheerleader and qualified coach who wants to spread the cheerleading sport in her home town.

Cheerleading is not widely known in the UK or recognised as a sport, and yet the levels of strength, flexibility, co-ordination and power needed to take part are all associated with 'traditional' sports.

Rachael explains: "For me cheerleading combines five elements – cheer, dance, jumps, stunting and gymnastics. It also promotes teamwork, confidence and mental as well as physical agility. I have had so much fun learning cheerleading I wanted to set up a class in Ross.

"I have organised a free taster evening at Ashfield Park School on Thursday, 22nd April, to let people know about the sport. The first session will be from 6.30-7.30pm for ages 10-16. I will explain about cheerleading and then people will be able to learn a classic cheer, dance and finally get to try and build a cheerleading pyramid. Parents are invited to this initial session.

"The second taster class is from 7.45-8.45pm and is for ages 17 plus. This is cheerleading aerobics and gives a full aerobic work-out and you get to use pompoms!"
