MADAM, I visit our library most weeks and never fail to glance up and admire the mosaic. Every week I pause and wonder and today I decided I must ask the question. The library staff could not help but, can anyone please explain the red blob on John Kyrle's face?

The Gazette got in touch with the mosaic's designers, and put this question to them. Apparently John Kyrle wore a fake beauty spot or had a mole on his cheek. The red blob is simply the artist's impression of how he might have looked – although clearly it is somewhat exaggerated.
