MADAM, In these troubled times and after the clamour of the past two weeks I have to say that I expect my district councillor, Harry Bramer, to do everything in his power to curtail the spending of money that we haven't got. But then I note that the recent snorting and snuffling coming from the jolly brigade seems to suggest that he might be getting it right.

There might perhaps be some value in our failing students of arithmetic being taken to Paris for a serious look at the école Polytechnique; but the jolly sort are unlikely to be improved by this method.

Moreover, the way that this prime minister has signed his name to the Lisbon Treaty has made it less likely that we as a nation will remain a party to it as it gets more uncomfortable. So too much association with foreigners with no desire to educate us is probably not a good idea.
