Dear Editor
I see the climate change deniers were allowed plenty of space in your letters pages last week. Is that an extremist description of the letters from Peter Martin and Steve Davis? No - because their approach can be summed up as “far too little, far too late”, and in its effect it will be no different to the blatant CC denial of Donald Trump.
The science, even from the conservative IPCC, is calling for a 45% emissions cut by 2030. So where is the massive programme to insulate our homes and offices? A realistic programme would easily employ half a million people - but there is no sign of it. Where is the programme to build a viable public transport system powered by electricity from renewables? One that would liberate people from total reliance on their cars? We don’t have one. Instead the government is set on encouraging more flying with another runway at Heathrow, and building HS2, a “prestige project” which will only meet a fraction of our transport needs.
The only people currently displaying a wide awake response to climate change reality are our young people out on strike, and those backing XR protests. Those actions are entirely proportionate to the crisis we face. Everyone else is part of the “blind leading the blind” - and heading directly towards climate chaos.
