Dear Editor

There have been worrying rumours in recent years that our potholes were to be filled and mended. Indeed about a year or so ago some of our favourite potholes had yellow paint around the rim to identify them.

Thankfully nothing came of it and they are still there. Our potholes provide a valuable service of course: traffic calming at no cost to the Council; increased awareness and enhanced driving skills in avoiding oncoming cars whilst slaloming to avoid damage both to car and pothole. But the threat to our potholes remains and if nothing is done, in coming years we may find our potholes disappearing. So what’s to be done? Here’s the plan – POP (Protect Our Potholes).

It calls for everyone who feels as I do to select your favourite pothole and at a given time park your vehicle above it for an hour or two to protect it. Preferably over a peak time for the message to be ‘driven’ home. We have learned to live with our potholes for years; it would be a pity to lose them by inaction now.
