Dear Editor
I can recommend another film in addition to those mentioned in last week’s Ross Gazette. Dan Snow’s film called “ War’s Secret Shame: Shell Shock”. At last the damaging effects on the mind and mental health are now being acknowledged by the military. This condition is now known as PTSD or post traumatic stress disorder and is defined as “an anxiety disorder caused by very frightening or distressing events”. WW1 soldier Wilfrid Massey-Lynch’s daughter told me about her father who suffered as a result of shell shock. After a period of recuperation he was returned to his regiment, but shortly afterwards was killed in action. Details of his life can be seen in the recent Ross Gazette WW1 Supplement.
