Dear Editor
This letter is in reply to Mr R Burton’s letter, “Tourists who have nowhere to stay”.
Unfortunately, there have been several hotel closures in Ross-on-Wye, but that is true across the country in many towns. Since 2010 we have had, the raising of VAT to 20%, above inflation increases in Business rates (blame the government not the local council), the raising of the NLW and introduction of workplace pensions.
These have increased hotelier’s costs, whilst most people’s wages have declined in real terms.
On top of that, Brexit uncertainty has decreased corporate business, with the drop in the value of the pound causing increases in food and drink prices.
However, we do still have a lot to celebrate in Ross with a brilliant offer for tourists, an increasing eclectic mix of shops, restaurants and bars.
Our hotels and B&B’s aren’t doing so bad either, with Glewstone ranked first by travellers in Herefordshire on Tripadvisor, the King’s Head Hotel ranked second and the Royal ranked fourth. Getting great reviews, is indicative of the investment put into these businesses and the service and hard work of their fantastic staff.
As for price, budget hotels can on face value seem cheaper, but when breakfast, convenience and other extras are added, they are often more expensive. Please check before booking.
