Dear Editor,
Those of us who live on, or near, the Ross southern bypass, sorry Alton Street, will be relieved to read Councillor Cutter’s letter last week stating that he was trying to find a solution, ‘to the large vehicles using Alton Street and Kent Avenue’.
I don’t envy him this task as there is no easy answer, nor do I wish to add to his headaches, but I would point out that ‘speeding’ is an additional and urgent problem particularly where the road narrows and straightens between Penyard Lane and Kent Road.
My next door neighbour was clipped recently by the wing mirror of a passing van clearly exceeding the speed limit. What speed limit you ask? There are no signs along the length of Alton Street. Crossing becomes a matter of fine judgement, especially for the elderly and those with young children, and it is always advisable to keep in from the edge of the road – if you value your toes and it is possible given the minimal width of the pavement in some parts.
Can I suggest some speed bumps be installed? It won’t solve the HGV problem, Councillor Cutter, but it will make this heavily-used road a bit safer.
