Dear Editor
Apologies for the intrusion, but I am trying to save part of Herefordshire’s heritage.
Herefordshire already has a flag and it has been flown on many occasions at many locations across the county and beyond for many many years. I have even seen it flying in my home town, Ross, in recent weeks!
As obviously a few people can’t recognize Herefordshire’s flag. It used to be flown regularly from the Market House in Ross when it was the heritage centre. I bought one in Much Marcle about a decade ago, though never got round to getting a flagpole as it is a bit odd having a flagpole outside your home.
I am not sure why the Flag Institute hasn’t registered it, perhaps they filed the flag under Hertfordshire like most organisations based in the south-east have a tendency to do.
Feel free to vote for the new contenders, but they look pretty amateurish in comparison to the current flag! You can swap a pedigree flag for a dog’s breakfast if you wish, but as a Herefordian I will be sticking to the flag we have.
If the Shire want to organise a design competition, i would recommend one for designing a new library for the city of Hereford so that the museum on Broad Street can finally have the space it needs to show off the amazing collection it holds and thereby share the wonderful history of our county with more visitors and local people alike.
