DESPITE a shorter entry of finished cattle being entered for the bank holiday livestock sale in Ross-on-Wye the auction continued with a fast trade.
Auctioneers RG and RB Williams report that demand remained consistent throughout the sale with steers topping at £2,566 per head.
Quality butchers’ heifers topped at 335p per kilogramme representing £2,566 for a blonde cross heifer from Messrs DM & CS Andrews of Glen Court Farm and a nice run of Sim cross steers and heifers from F Wilcox, of Quinmoor Farm, reaching £2,279.
The bank holiday Monday sale brought in many lambs as the demand was there with strong competition from start to finish peaking at £231.
Many large runs of lambs were presented by local farmers with strong demand shown throughout.
Strongest demand was shown for export lambs weighing between 38kg and 44kgs with the entry dominated by this weight selling to an average of 483p per kilogramme and peaking at 529p per kilogramme.
A nice run of lambs from W C R Cooke & Son of Nantyderri Farm topping at £231 – 45.5kg. The auctioneer stated that more lambs could have easily been sold to this electric trade. The overall average price of lambs was £201per head
Another large entry of cull ewes and rams met a strong trade topping £217. The demand remained constant throughout the auction with the complete consignment averaging £176 per head.
The top vendors were the A & JM Sheppard Partnership of Tennersfield Farm; D A Evans & Partners of Pantygoitre Farm.
The forthcoming auction on Thursday, May 28 features the sale of 110 Store Cattle from NJ & BA Turner & Son which includes 75 Angus/Charolais/Limousin cross Steers/Heifers aged between 12 and 19 months.
