A GOOD entry of finished cattle continued to meet a fast trade at this week’s livestock market in Ross-on-Wye.
Auctioneers RG and RB Williams report that the demand remained consistent throughout the sale with steers topping at £3,049 per head from Messrs GH & GG Savidge.
Cattle remained keenly sought after by retail buyers with prices ranging between 350p and 380p per kilogramme.
There were few traditional butcher-type native heifers and steers forward which sold well either side of 340p per kilogramme.
More cattle would have been sold to this trade and will be wanted for the forthcoming weeks said the auctioneers.
The overall average price of finished cattle was £2,180. The top vendors DM & CS Andrews of Glen Court Farm and C Simcock & Sons of The Green Farm.
A reduced entry of spring lambs met strong competition from start to finish peaking at £198.
Meat and weight were the calm of the day trading between 370p and 400p per kilogramme...
Premium prices were paid for high quality export lambs from B Blandford & Sons topping and averaging at 465p per kilogramme.
Lambs topped at £198 for a run of Texel Cross from Messrs N & I Beavan of Trothlands Farm.
The entry was dominated by heavier sorts with those weighing more than 43kg saw lambs trading between £170 and £198.
Meat is key with spring lambs for buyers in all weights and classes.
A good entry of cull ewes met strong demand topping £202 from Messrs A & N Pearce of Sanigar Farm.
Continental Cross ewes continued to trade between £180 and £202 per head.
Leaners sorts of ewes generally changed hands between £140 and £160 per head and small hill ewes traded around £130.
The overall average price of ewes was £168 per head.
