AUCTIONEERS RG and RB Williams report a shorter entry of finished cattle peaked at 420p per kilogramme at the livestock market in Ross-on-Wye on October 27.
Quality well fleshed butcher steers and heifers sold between 400p and 420p per kilogramme while a run of heavyweight steers topped at £2,812 with an average of £2,600 and quality butcher heifers peaked at £2,468 with heavyweight heifers selling to 420p per kilogramme achieving £2,431. The top vendor was GE Phillips & Son of Dairy Farm.
The auctioneer, William Probert predicted that more cattle could have been sold to this trade, and this is expected to continue until Christmas.
An entry of cull cows topped at £2,343. Well meated cows sold from to 290p per kilogramme and leaner sorts sold between 240p and 260p per kilogramme.
The overall average price of cows was £1,851. The top vendor was JM & SC Whittall of Wessington Court.
A shorter entry of lambs met a blistering trade being far dearer than expected peaking at £189 per head, representing 339p per kilogramme.
Any number of quality export lambs sold between 320p and 339p per kilogramme with all classes meeting strong demand from start to finish.
Light weight lambs saw the dearest trade averaging 320p per kilogramme with heavy weight lambs attracting a very fast trade selling between £160 and £189. The overall average price of lambs was £138/head.
The top vendor was N & I Bevan of Trothlands Farm.
A good entry of cull ewes and rams met strong competition with more buyers present for grazing ewes. Stronger continentals topped at £165 with meatier or stronger sorts selling between £140 and £165 and leaner ewes saw the greatest lift selling between £90 to £130. The overall average of cull ewes was £115.
The top vendors were RJ Watkins of Great Corras Farm.
