18-year-old Tilly Lawson, who is currently on a gap year working in an orphanage in Kenya, was delighted to meet a child who was wearing a jumper which she instantly recognised. The jumper had been donated by Tilly’s former primary school.

Tilly’s mum, Michelle, told the Ross Gazette that around three years ago, a group at St Michael and All Angels’ Church in Walford organised an aid package to be sent out to African schools and orphanages. Walford Primary School donated stationary items, such as pens, pencils and books, and also old school uniforms.

At the orphanage, in amongst hundreds of children, Tilly met a little girl who was wearing a jumper with the Walford Primary School logo on, and she was delighted to see that donated items from home were being put to good use.

Tilly has only been working at the orphanage for a week, and she will stay for six months. While she is there, she is teaching hygiene and English.

After she completed Primary School at Walford, Tilly went on to Haberdashers’ Monmouth School For Girls, but Tilly has five siblings, and her youngest is still a pupil at Walford.

Before she went on her gap year, Tilly secured a place at Exeter University, but deferred her place, so she could travel, and she is due to start Uni in September 2017.

Tilly had to raise £3,000 prior to her gap year, and she raised the full amount herself. She took part in an endurance challenge, with her dad, where they climbed 32 peaks in the Brecon Beacons within 72 hours.

When Tilly returns to the UK in six months, she will spend two weeks at home, before she sets off on her next adventure; backpacking around America.
