A troubled 30-year-old Coleford man living a ‘hobo existence’ hanged himself at Symonds Yat, an inquest heard on Tuesday, December 3rd.

Gavin Gray had a travelling lifestyle, moving from county to county, which led to a ‘patchy engagement’ with mental health services so that his psychiatric issues were never fully treated, the Gloucester inquest was told.

In January he was admitted to Wotton Lawn hospital in Gloucester and sectioned under the Mental Health Act. In February when the Section ended he self-discharged against medical advice.

The inquest heard he was admitted again on March 31st but he then moved to Wales and contact was lost again.

On May 31st he was seen by a GP but on June 6th was found hanging near a track known as High Meadow Trail in Symonds Yat.

Senior Coroner Katie Skerrett said: “This 30 year old man had a long history of mental health difficulties worsened by the fact he wasn’t in any one place for any length of time. He had attempted to take his own life in the past and it seems on this day he decided to take action.”
