One hundred years ago Private Albert Knapper from Brampton Abbotts lost his life in the service of his country. Recently members of his family, together with members of the Ross Branch of the Royal British Legion, went along, on a beautiful sunny afternoon, to the churchyard where Rev Sarah Jones held a short ceremony.
Pte Albert Knapper of the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry was just 19 when he was killed on June 25th, 1918.
Two of Albert’s nephews, Bill and Stephen together with Bill’s wife, Janet, and great nephew, Mark, who laid a poppy wreath, and his son, Ben, attended. Albert has never been forgotten by his family and when Janet asked Margaret, the secretary of the branch if anything could be done on this very special anniversary, Margaret was honoured to organise the ceremony.
Margaret told the Ross Gazette that Remembrance is what the Royal British Legion is about and we must not forget those who made the final sacrifice.
Bill and Janet are very grateful to everyone from the British Legion, especially the Standard Bearers; Richard Ceci, who carried the Branch Standard, and Derek Griffiths, who carried his Association Standard.
