Family members and members the Ross Branch of the Royal British Legion gathered in the grounds of the Forest of Dean Crematorium to dedicate a memorial bench to Margaret Jones, former Secretary and stalwart of the branch.
The Memorial Bench was chosen by Margaret’s daughter, Fiona and the family, and it is a fitting tribute to a remarkable lady who gave so much of her time to others.
The plaque on the bench reads ‘In loving memory of Margaret Ethel Jones. A wonderful Mum, Nan and Friend. Her friendship was an inspriation. Her love was a blessing. Dearly missed but in our hearts forever.”
Graham Aplin, Chairman of the Ross RBL told the Ross Gazette that ‘Service not self’ is a motto of the Legion but, he said, Margaret carried out all that she did with this saying in mind.
Another important RBL saying refers to standing together, ‘shoulder to shoulder’ which Margaret felt everyone within both her family, and her wider family at the Ross Branch, did. Mr Aplin said that the third well-known saying associated with the Legion is ‘Live On’, and, he said: “Margaret’s memory will certainly do this for all of us. Margaret held to her heart the need to look after all those who had served, and those who are currently serving in our Armed Forces. We will remember you.”See this week’s paper for more stories like this, available in shops and as a Digital Edition now.
