Local resident Jenny Harrison, who runs battlefield tours for veterans, their families and other groups interested in history, is organising an unusual trip next year.

In June 2015 a charity will be unveiling a memorial 100 years after the Battle of Bellewaarde which took place on June 16th, 1915. Jenny is organising the travel arrangements for supporters of the charity, who are spread across many countries. Many of the people who are attending the tour have family members who fought during this battle.

The charity, lead by Martin Clift, is desperate to raise awareness of this terrible event which saw the loss of over 1000 British soldiers in less than 12 hours, in a half a square mile, making it one of the bloodiest battles of WWI. Ultimately many more would die later of their wounds or infection, some regiments lost 75% of their men.
