Madam, Your statement that 'during the war evacuees from London used Penyard House as a school' is a little misleading. In fact, early in the war Channing School, a well established girls school, was evacuated from North London to this area.

The senior school was accommodated at the Chase Hotel and the junior school at the Wye Hotel (Penyard House). The school's pupils during the war included many local girls, including my late sister. After the war Channing returned to London, where it continues to flourish.
