Morgan Baynham-Williams, a Ross rower, coxed the Oxford University Women’s Boat Club Squad to victory at the Cancer Research UK Boat Races, on Easter Sunday, March 27th.
Morgan spoke to the Ross Gazette in a little more detail about the squad’s win. Morgan said: “Essentially the reason I made a move from out of the stream and into the more sheltered water, was because the waves were so big, every time we took in water it slowed us down.
“A lot of people don’t realise we were taking in any water, but I was sat three quarters up to my knees in it.”
She added that although the water was not as fast moving in the shallow areas, and the normal protocol is to steer clearly and slowly, the conditions on the day would not allow this. When asked how it felt to take part in such a high-profile event, Morgan said:?“It’s all been really incredible, I’ve always wanted to take part in the boat Race, and I’ve always wanted to go to Oxford University. The team’s incredible and we support each other, and they must have had to really trust me.”
Morgan is also a member of Ross-on-Wye Rowing Club, and has been since she was ten years old. “They’re very supportive all the time,” she said. “Whenever I go home I’ll go and row there or I’ll do some coaching.”
Morgan has got a busy time ahead of her, in addition to completing her degree, she has to trial for the National Team. The Ross Gazette wishes Morgan good luck in all her future endeavours.
