Jesse Norman has clarified the current legal status of e-scooters in the run up to Christmas.

In his ministerial role for the department of transport, the Hereford and South Herefordshire MP is making sure the law around the micro-mobility machines is clear to all those selling, buying and receiving e-scooters as Christmas gifts.

He said: “Today (December 8) I have sent letters to all the major e-scooter retailers reminding them of their responsibility to make clear to shoppers this Christmas that private e-scooters are illegal on UK roads.”

Currently it is not legal to use electric scooters on public roads, pavements, cycle lanes, cycle paths, or in other public spaces. In the UK, it is illegal to use an electric scooter on public property.

It is still legal to buy an e-scooter and use them on private property or land. These rules are experiencing a lot of pressure to change.

There have been UK government trials underway into the safe use of electric scooters as a mode of transport.

If the rules change, this could bring electric scooter use in line with the use of electric bikes.

The Ross-on-Wye MP was appointed minister of state in the department for transport last October.

Mr Norman has been the MP for the local constituency since 2010.
