Cyclists have reacted with fury to a tweet by local MP Jesse Norman.
The MP for Hereford and South Herefordshire posted a tweet on the Conservatives official Twitter account saying that the Conservatives are cracking down on dangerous cycling. The tweet said:?“We’re launching a consultation into dangerous cycling so that our most vulnerable road users are protected.”
This follows the announcement that the government has plans for new road safety laws, including offences of causing death by dangerous or careless cycling, which would see cyclists who kill pedestrians treated in a similar way to drivers.
In recent weeks the Department for Transport has announced a series of measures to protect vulnerable road users, including: funding to give driving instructors training to ensure cyclists’ safety is prioritised and investing £100m to improve dangerous roads.
However a barrage of responses to the latest tweet called the message shameful. One tweet said:?“what a disgraceful tweet that was and use of a pic of cycle commuters on a cycle lane was shameful.”
Another commented:?“An awful tweet.”
Minister Jesse Norman apologised and tweeted:?“The sentence would better be “This is one of many measures to improve road safety and protect vulnerable road users, including cyclists—and we would value your views.”
