Desperate parents of children who attend Much Birch School are pleading for a pedestrian crossing on the A49 to make their children's journeys to school a little safer.

One mum, Sharon Davies, who has three children, is leading the campaign for a pedestrian crossing after a lorry narrowly missed her daughter when the family were crossing the road to get to Much Birch Primary School.

Although there is a 40 mile an hour speed limit along this stretch of the A49, Sharon claims that many of the vehicles which travel along this road are going at a much higher speed than that. The mums took their campaign for a pedestrian crossing to the Much Birch Parish Council on March 4th.

Sarah Carr, the Liberal Democrat Prospective MP for Hereford and South Herefordshire attended the Parish Council with Sharon and other concerned residents, at their request, to show her support.

Sarah Carr said: "It is important that everyone in the local community and those elected work together to convince the Highways Agency of the need for a Pedestrian crossing on the A49 at Much Birch. With a doctors' surgery, church and community hall on one side of the busy road and the primary school on the other road safety is a real concern.

"I strongly support Sharon and will do all I can to help her get a safe school crossing."

Sharon added that Councillor Richard Smith was also very supportive of their campaign.

Sharon told The Ross Gazette: "We just want our children to be able to get to school safely, this is a popular school and it is difficult to park at the school so there are lots of families who have to cross the road."
