MADAM, I wonder how many responsible and caring dog owners in Ross and surrounding areas are aware of the draconian measures Herefordshire Council is preparing to inflict on them?
How many actually saw (and absorbed) the measures stated in the proposed Dog Control Public Notices in the Hereford Journal on Wednesday, June 9th? For those who missed the notices they inform us that in future dogs must be kept on leads at all times in designated areas and banned from certain areas of land.
I do feel that some compromise could be reached rather then this harsh veto - surely the positioning of more litter bins (on the perimeters) and some notices reminding dog owners of the need to clear up would alleviate the situation? All responsible dog owners clear up anyhow, it is only the few who need reminding. Alternatively dogs could be kept on leads from say 9am to 5pm and obviously when the open spaces were being utilised.
Dogs provide companionship to many people, the health benefits of walking are well known, and they do need to be able to run, under supervision of course.
Are the council now expecting all dog owners to take their dogs to the Forest of Dean for exercise as there will be nowhere left in this area?
Imagine the environmental implications as owners will have to go by car, the expense, the time factor and the likelihood of coming face to face with a bad tempered wild boar.
Anyone wishing to make representations in respect of the above should write or email Herefordshire Council - closing date is Wednesday, July 7th.
D Cooper, Ross
