Several organisation have worked together to ensure that Ross Town Band has a spacious and secure place to store their instruments, as well as to practice in.
When the Larruperz Centre opened in 1990, the then chairman Cllr David Fishpool was involved with Ross Town Band. At the opening he remarked on the size of the building and joked that all he wanted was a room for the band to practice in.
Circumstances worked against that for one reason or another and the band’s home for most of the time since then has been the Ryefield Centre.
With the imminent closure of that building by Herefordshire Council, the band requested space at the Larruperz, and the community association which runs it was only too pleased to oblige as they felt that the town band should be based at the town’s community centre.
One overriding problem was storage and that’s where the full weight of community spirit came to bear. The Ross Men’s Shed members were asked to help, and they stepped in and filled the one wall of the aptly named Constance room with cupboards large enough to hold the band’s equipment. Lots of the materials were donated by local firms and the equipment is now housed there and band practice also takes place there every Friday with the youth element meeting at 6.30pm and the full band at 7.30pm. If you are interested in joining just come along and meet them.
