Madam, I have read with interest the articles regarding the possible moving of the swimming pool and the letters about this matter.

I swim, if possible, six days each week and have been taking my daily exercise at the pool since 1990.

The facilities are a great asset to the town and we should be very grateful to all those who made the present pool possible through their hard work many years ago. More recently, praise is due to Halo for their upgrades to the facilities and a big thank you to the staff at Ross pool.

With the Olympic achievements still so fresh in our minds, I think it is beholden to the incredible efforts of Great Britain's athletes and also the people whose vision provided us with our current facilities that we should be aiming to secure something better for the future, rather than something equal to or poorer than the present pool.

As part of our town's contribution towards the Olympic legacy, I believe we should think positively and campaign for a 50 metre pool and I was delighted to read in this week's report in a letter to the editor, 'A little more openness', that there is money in the kitty already. This news has led me to believe my idea could become a reality.

I appreciate my proposal may sound ambitious but today our nearest 50 metre swimming pools are in Cardiff and Coventry. How does that help to promote the Olympic talent we may have within our town and surrounding areas?

We all know Ross has a valuable motorway link and can easily be accessed from many directions. Where better to site a facility of which we can all be proud and which could bring much needed extra business to our town?

It appears a potential site is already available as I understand the old Somerfield warehouse has been unused for the past three years.

One of the biggest concerns would almost certainly be access to the new location. My proposed site would be able to provide coach and car parking which should be free of charge. An integrated public transport service running regularly to and from the site would also help people to enjoy a wide range of sport and leisure facilities.

The complex I have in mind should be a first class venue, not just for the people of this area but also for others from further afield, providing swimming pool and multi sports facilities, a gymnasium and studio spaces. It could also provide accommodation and catering so that people training for serious competitions – perhaps even for the next Olympics in Brazil – are able to stay and train as intensively as they need to succeed.

This kind of facility will benefit the whole local area, potentially creating much needed new jobs and providing all our schools with wonderful facilities to inspire the champions of the future.

I know an ambitious project like this will take commitment and money. While I do not have the expertise to know how to access the funding needed, I am more than willing to be part of a team to set up the project and see it through to the reality I am convinced it could become.

Christopher Deane, Ross
