There was good news for several local people in this year's Honours List. Receiving the British Empire Medal (BEM), brought out of abeyance in the Queen's Birthday Honour's list in June 2012, was Wendy Price for her services to children, young people and families in Llangrove.

Many generations of children have passed through Mrs Price's care, and continue to do so, in her capacity as manager and supervisor at Llangrove Leapfrogs and Girl Guide leader in Ross.

There was an OBE?for Paul David Newman, from Ross-on-Wye, for his work with voluntary organisations. For the past eight years Paul (55) has been helping charities in need of specialised support, either due to temporary loss of leadership or financial shortfalls. Among the charities he has helped have been Volunteer Reading Help, In Kind Direct and Victim Support West Midlands. He is currently helping Blood Pressure UK by acting as its interim Chief Executive.

Headteacher at Barrs Court School, Richard Aird, was awarded an OBE for services to special educational needs.

Dr Jonathon Godfrey, Principal of Hereford Sixth Form College was also awarded an OBE for services to education.
