Madam, I have always understood that the publishers of a local newspaper had a duty to remain balanced and unbiassed. If that is so, you as Editor have certainly failed to do so today. No doubt you had a large number of letters about the coming Voting referendum, but you have printed only one - in favour of AV.
This is very annoying. Leaving aside the fact that I totally disagree with the view expressed, it is also entirely inappropriate for you, as Editor, to publish a letter in support of only one side of the argument (including, incidentally, the spurious statistics quoted) while ignoring the other side.
I hope to see an apology from you in your next edition, for this breach of accepted journalistic etiquette.
Lucy Harrison
Editor's note: The letter we published was, in fact, the only letter we had received about this subject. Do readers think we should withhold letters simply because they only give one side of an argument? The point of the letters page, I believe, is so that people can give their opinions and then other readers can have the right of reply.
Unfortunately Ms Harrison has only criticised my decision to publish the letter, not explained why she disagreed with it, or put forward any reasons why people should not vote in favour of AV.
