MADAM, Saturday's Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Beauty Georgian Festival was a huge success and great fun. The way of life, rather uncomfortable when compared with ours, the soldiers, Lord Nelson and the Gilpin river trips, all were were there for us to see. We were handed booklets on the picturesque movement and maps of the river showing the designated viewing places along the river so that all can appreciate the glorious river Wye scenery.

Such a viewing place was once contrived at Sellack, revealing a classic picturesque view across Castle meadow woods, overlooking the river meadows and on to King's Caple. Regrettably, our County Planning Department has authorised – building is well under way – an inappropriate suburban enclave of six executive-style houses.

The viewing sites lower down the river have all been re-established with large charity grants and are much appreciated by tourists. Not so in Hereford and the opportunity of a viewing site near Ross has been lost.
