The Ross Meeting Centre has been open for six months and in that time has welcomed lots of visitors with mild to moderate dementia. To mark this anniversary there will be an Open Afternoon at Ross Meeting Centre on Wednesday, October 25th at Christ Church, Edde Cross Street.
The group continues to meet weekly and is very grateful for the volunteers who give their time to make sure there are about six people ‘on duty’ each week. Some people have found new skills in leading an activity or in the kitchen and all of them have found great joy and fun in sharing in the meetings.
They are finding that as well as participants with dementia benefiting from the interaction and activities, their carers are forming a valuable support group for each other. It is clear that caring for someone with dementia is all consuming and just to be able to talk to someone else who understands is encouraging.
The Community Dementia Nurses and Alzheimer Society Advisers refer people to Ross Meeting Centre on a regular basis, but they still have space for a few more.
Their activities have included: sharing memories about schooldays and holidays; word games; making summer gardens and cards; singing and percussion sessions and exercise sessions.
On October 25th the Open Afternoon will take place between 1.30pm and 3pm. Members of the public who might like to volunteer to help or would benefit from attending are welcome to drop in to find out more.
