MADAM, This autumn, in an attempt to curb the spread of bovine TB, the coalition government plans to cull 70% of the badger population in two trial areas. One of these lies to the west of Gloucester and includes the Forest of Dean and parts of south east Herefordshire.
Unlike in previous trials the badgers will not be trapped prior to culling but will be lured from their setts and then shot with rifles or shotguns. The likelihood of injuring the badgers rather than killing them, or of stray bullets (which can travel up to three miles) harming people, livestock or other wildlife is not inconsiderable.
Since badgers are nocturnal animals the culls will take place after dark, and to avoid reprisals the government is keeping exact locations and timings a secret.
